Lightweight VIII - Ilan Regatta 2002Sydney University Boat Club normally row out of the shed located at Linley Point, on the Lane Cove river. While a new shed is being constructed the team is training from the St Ignatius boatshed at Riverview.


Rowing within the Sydney University Boat Club(SUBC) is divided into three areas; each squad has their own competition goals and objectives:

1.Elite Squad: National Selection regattas, State Championship and NSWRA point score regattas and University Games. This squad is in 3 sections.
Elite Sen A - members currently at Institute programs of at Sen A level within the Lane Cove group.
U23 Elite - members at Lane Cove training for selection in U23 Australian teams.
Youth - school leavers group traing towards U21 national events and Youth teams for Intersatte regatta and Youth Cup.

2.Club Rowing: NSWRA point score regattas, University Games and Social Rowing.

3.Junior Squad: NSWRA point score regattas, National Titles and Australian Junior selection.

In 1996, NSWIS entered an agreement with the SUBC to be a Development Centre for Lightweight rowers in NSW. Since then a large number of Australian U/23 Lightweight Coxless Four have been trained out of SUBC. In 2000 Sydney University under then coach Joe Rodrigues moved back into elite heavyweight development and is now one of the strongest centres in Australia for development in this category.

In September 2001, the Boat Clubs title was upgraded to Elite Development Training Centre.The club now develops U/23 Heavyweight and Lightweight athletes.

Current Coaches:

Director of Rowing: Mark Prater
Mark has worked in Youth Development at SUBC for three years before taking the role of Director for the balance of the 2009-10 season. Mark has coached deveopment athletes such as Nick Purnell, Charles Budd, James Goswell and Ed White - all 2009 U23 Australina representatives.

Men's/Women's Elite Development Coach - SUBC/SUWRC: James Macartney.
James joined Sydney Uni in early 2009 after moving from ACT where he was ACT Academy development coach. James has worked on the development of U21 Women and Youth Men in 2009 and in Dec 2009 moved to the elite squad at Lane Cove.

SUWRC/SUBC Head Coach Development: Alan Bennett.
Also known around the world in rowing simply as AB. AB looks after development programs for both men and women based mainly at the Glebe shed but also working with the Director to ensure progression of development athletes into the elite squad.

Assistant Coach - Development : Will Townsend ( Tunner) James joined Sydney Uni in December 2009 on an initial one year appointment to the Intermediate and development program the Glebe boatshed. Will has many years as an active and successful competitor for SUBC and is now developing his coaching skills through tertiary study and practical work.

1.Francis Hegerty - Australian Mens U/23 Eight, 2002 World U/23 Regatta, NSW State Championships, U/23 Pair 2003. Stroke U23 Aussie Eight 2003 -Bronze Medallist 2003, 2003 National Champion U23 Eight and Four. NSW Kings Cup Eight, 2003, 2005, 2006. NSW Champion Men's Pair 2005. NSW Champion Men's Eight 2005-6-7
Selected in Australian Sen A Coxless Four 2006and 2007. Won silver in Men's Four at 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver at the 2009 World Championships.

2.Matthew Ryan - Gold Medallist, Australian Jnr Mens Coxed Four 2002, NSW State Championships, U/23 Pair 2003. No 4 Aussie U23 Eight 2003 - Bronze Medallist. 2003 National Champion U23 Eight and Four. 2004 Australian U23 Coxed Four Gold Medallist at U23 Worlds. 2005 and 2006 King's Cup Eight. Australian Sen A Coxless Four World Cahmpionships 2005. Champion Men's Elite Pair of NSW 2006, Champion Men's Elite Four 2006 and Eight 2005-6-7. Matt won an Olympic silver medals in 2008 in the Men's Four at the Beiging Olympics and in 2009 won the Kings Cup for the second year running and silver at the 2009 World Championships.

3. Fergus Pragnell - Aussie U23 Coxed Four 2004 Gold Medallist U23 Worlds. 2005 Australian U23 Pair, Four and Eight Champion. 2005 and 2006 King's Cup Eight. NSW Elite Coxless Pair Champion 2007 and NSW Champion Eights winner 2005-6-7. Kings Cup wins for NSW in 2008 and 2009 and selected in the Aus Men's Senior A eight in 2009

4. Jeremy Stevenson - Jeremy developed his rowing at Swan River and WA Instite of Sport. jeremy was the stroke of the 2006 Australian Eight and after moving to the AIS in 2006 has joined SUBC. Jeremy was member of the SUBC Champion Eight of NSW for 2007. Jeremy was selected in the Australian Olympic eight in 2008.

5. Nick Hudson - Winner 2003 Youth Olympics Scull. Aussie U23 Quad Scull 2003 Gold Medallist.
Winner Interstate Youth Eight 2003. 2004 Australian U23 Quad Scull Bronze Medallist U23 Worlds. Nick had a short retirement to complete his university studies but has returned to full training in 2006. With Dan Noonan he recently won the Elite Double Scull at the 2007 NSW Championships and was a member of the 2007 Champion Eight of NSW. Nick is the current club Captain of SUBC. Nick won the NSW Elite single sculls and two national titles in 2009 and was a member of the winning 2009 NSW Kings Cup crew. Nick was selected in the Australian Men's Quad for 2009 winning silver at the World Championships.

6. Sam Loch. Sam returned from Princeton in 2007 after a fantastic rowing career which saw him stroke the Princeton eight to victory in the Head of the Charles and go through the season with only one loss. Sam made legends at Princeton with his unique and unequalled dedication to training and instutional life. Sam is now training at the AIS and rowing for SUBC. Despite the setback of a broken wrist ( bike accident) in Nov '09 Sam has made it back on the water as one of leading heavyweights in the AIS program. Sam represented in the Aussie eight in 2008 at Beijing and again in 2009. Sam was a member of the winning NSW Kings Cup crew in 2008 and 2009.

7. Mitch Estens - NSW Youth Cup Team 2004. Winner Youth Cup Pair and Four. 2003-4 Member of The Kings School Eight. 2005 seelcted in Australian Junior Coxed Four.Mitch was member of the NSW Youth Eight which won the Men' Youth Eights at the 2006 Interstate Regatta, 2006 Youth Cup and the 2007 Youth Olympics. Selected in the 2007 Australian U23 Eight as the 2nd ranked sweep athlete. In 2009 Mitch was selected in the Australian Men's eight.

8. Tom Herschmiller : 2004 Olympic Silver Medallist for Canada in the Coxless Fours ( who can forget that race !). Stroke of winning Oxford and Cambridge Cup crew 2005 and a member of NSW Champion Eight 2006 and 2007. Tom is studying Medicine at Sydney University and this is is primary focus. Tom keeps fit with regular land training and is ready to bring his experience assist SUBC in major events as his study schedule permits. Tom has recently completed his medical studies and internship and in June 2009 took up a post studying orthopaedics at Duke University Medical Centre in North Carolina.

9.Richard Allsop: Australian Junior Four 2004.
Winner NSW Youth Eights in 2006 & 2007. Richard was also picked for the 2007 Australian Men's U23 Eight which competed at the World Championships in Strathclyde, Scotland, gaining a Bronze Medal. Richard took up an AIS scholarship in late 2008, rowed in the winning NSW Kings Cup crew in 2009 and was selected in the 2009 Australian Men's Eight.

10. James Goswell: Winner NSW Youth Eight 2007. James is the third generation Goswell to row at Sydney Uni and has been the outstanding school leaver of 2007 having gained selection in the Australian U23 Eight just five months after finishing his Highre School Certificate. James was selected in the Men's U23 eight in 2008 and 2009 and was reserve for the 2009 NSW Kings Cup Eight. James is taking a seasons rest from rowing for 2009-10.

11. Brodie Buckland: Brodie is an American citizen who has recently moved to Australia for rowing and studying purposes. Brodie rowed in the 2007 American Men's Eight which finished 4th and the 2007 World Championships, in that same year he also rowed in the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, unfortunately finishing runners up. Brodie has his eyes set on becoming an Australian citizen ( her recentlly was granted residency) and representing AUS at the 2012 olympics. Brodie is competed with fellow SUBC rower Terrence Alfred at Henley 2009 in the pairs making the semi finals.

12.Terrence Alfred. Terrence made the 2007 Australian U23 Eight and stroked the crew to a bronze at the World Champs in Strathclyde. In late 2007 Terrence went to the AIS and was selected as one of two reserves for the Olympic men's sweep team. At the 2008 qualification regatta in Poland Terrence had to step into the Aus Men's Four on the morning of the final when Matt Ryan fell very sick and helped the crew win and qualify the boat for the Beijing Olympics. Terrence was a member of the winning NSW Kings Cup eights of 2008 and 2009. Terrence was stroke of NSW in the 2009 race when NSW won in 5 mins 30 secs with a margin of over five seconds.
Terrence started in post-grad Medicine at Notre Dame Sydney in 2009 and is working towards making the Australian Olympic team for London 2012.

13. Nick Purnell: Stared at Sydney Uni in 2009. Selected in the 2009 NSW Youth Olympic teamand won the Quad at Youth Olympics. Selected in the Australian Men's U23 eight in 2009.

14. Sasha Belonogoff : Started at Sydney Uni in 2009. Represented Australia in Junior Double Scull in 2008 and then in the U23 Quad in 2009 - winning bronze medals in both crews.
