In 1996, NSWIS entered an agreement with the SUBC to be a Development Centre for Lightweight rowers in NSW. Since then a large number of Australian U/23 Lightweight Coxless Four have been trained out of SUBC. In 2000 Sydney University under then coach Joe Rodrigues moved back into elite heavyweight development and is now one of the strongest centres in Australia for development in this category.
In September 2001, the Boat Clubs title was upgraded to Elite Development Training Centre. The club now develops U/23 Heavyweight and Lightweight athletes.
