Fire destroys SUBC Shed this morning 29th March 2006

Posted on: 28/3/06

Fire destroys SUBC Shed this morning 29th March 2006The historic 1960’s A – Frame boatshed of SUBC was completely destroyed by fire this morning at around 5 am. Sydney Uni Director of Rowing Marty Rabjohns arrived just prior to 5 am to find the downstairs well alight. As you can see from the photo attached the shed and all boats are completely destroyed.

This morning SUBC and SU Sport representatives will meet on site to assess the full picture. Police are currently investigating the fire to see if this was an accident or arson but with the unstable condition of the ruins it may be some days before investigations can be completed.

Sydney Uni Rowing’s immediate objective is to look after our rowers who have been chosen to attend the final selection regatta in April at Penrith.

Sydney Uni Rowing would like to express appreciation to other rowing clubs, particularly UTS, Melbourne Uni, Qld Uni, Sydney Rowing Club and St Ignatius plus NSWIS and Australian Rowing who have offered assistance with the loan of equipment for our rowers in the medium term or assistance with training space in their sheds.

Additional photos are in the gallery section of the website.

To all the other members of the rowing community who have already called to offer us help – our heartfelt thanks – we will definitely need your assistance in the coming season(s).
