SUBC Golf Day 7th December 2005

Posted on: 18/10/05

SUBC Golf Day 7th December 20052005 Sydney University Boat Club Golf Day

The first of what we hope will become a legendary annual event, SUBC Golf Day will be played at the remarkably picturesque St Michael’s Golf Club on the afternoon of Wednesday 7th December 2005.

The main event of the day is team event. The team score on each hole will be the best stableford score of the four players on that hole. A singles stableford event (with prizes for men and women) will be run in conjunction with the team event. There will also be ‘nearest-to-pin’ and ‘long drive’ prizes.

The conscientious will get to do a morning’s work - play will commence with a 12.30pm shotgun start on Wednesday 7th December 2005.

Post-play, there’ll be drinks and plenty of finger food, while we present prizes and draw the raffle.

The day represents a great opportunity for SUBC past oarsmen, sponsors and other supporters to catch up and have some fun, while helping to raise additional funds needed to finance each years’ boat purchases.

It would be terrific to see some former coxless fours or two pairs teaming up to do battle on the greens. There will be men’s, ladies’ and mixed fours playing that day.

So…don’t miss out on Wednesday 7th December 2005. Please support SUBC by:

Ψ Organising a four for golf
Ψ Sponsoring one of the 18 holes
Ψ Donating a prize or auction item
Read on for all details for the inaugural SUBC Golf Day. Please contact me on 02 9351 4986 or 0402 292 645 to discuss any aspects of the 2005 SUBC Golf Day. Your completed Entry Form can either be posted to the above address or faxed to 02 9351 4962.

Every golfer in Sydney should play at St Michael’s at least once a year. Your chance to do so is Wednesday 7th December!

Hope to see you there.

HEAD COACH
Sydney University Boat Club
THE EVENT

The main event of the day will be a Team Event. Each team of four players (men, ladies or mixed) will be competing to have the newly bought boat named after their team. The team score on each hole will be the best two-stableford scores of the four players on that hole.

All four team members should ideally have AGU or Women’s Golf NSW handicaps, but … if not … we’ll assign you a handicap for the day!

A Singles Event will be run in conjunction with the Teams Event. There will also be Novelty Event prizes for Long Drives and Nearest-to-Pins.
SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES

12.00noon: registration

1.00pm: shotgun start – this will require most fours to leave the clubhouse by
12.40pm for their designated starting tee (refer the following info on ‘Hiring of Golf Carts’)

6.00pm: 19th hole refreshments

6.45pm: presentation of prizes

7.00pm: finger food followed by an entertaining auction of donated items
HOW TO ENTER

Complete and return the attached Entry Form on behalf of your golfing four. If, for some reason, you are unable to organize your own golfing four, we’ll try to allocate you to one.
COST FOR THE DAY

For all players, the entry fee will be $135.00. This includes the cost of green fees, golf prizes, finger food and refreshments, and a small contribution to our fund-raising efforts.
STABLEFORD SCORING

Stableford scoring requires an understanding of how handicaps work. This can hopefully be appreciated from the following examples:

If your handicap is 7, you get to deduct one shot on the seven hardest holes (according to the stroke index on the scorecard)
If your handicap is 18, you get to deduct one shot on every hole
If your handicap is 24, you get to deduct two shots on the six hardest holes (according to the stroke index on the scorecard) and one shot on the other 12 holes

Stableford scoring is as follows:

1 stableford point for a net bogey
2 stableford points for a net par
3 stableford points for a net birdie
4 stableford points for a net eagle
5 stableford points for a net albatross

NB Your net score is the number of strokes that you’ve taken, less your handicap allowance (if any) on each hole

SHOTGUN START

All of the groups will be assigned a specific starting tee for the 1.00pm sharp shotgun start. Some holes may have more than one group starting on the par 5s and the longer par 4s depending on the number of team entrants.

It is essential that you know which tee you are starting on.

It is equally important that you leave the clubhouse in plenty of time to reach your starting tee for the 1.00pm sharp shotgun start.

Do not hit off earlier or later than the appointed starting time. Otherwise, you will create enormous congestion for the field of players.

The low marker in each group is responsible for the speed of play. Constantly make sure that your team is no more than 1½ shots behind the group in front of you. Also ensure that your team members pick up if they are not longer capable of scoring a stableford point on that hole.

DRESS REGULATIONS

Regulation golf attire is essential on the golf course, eg collared shirts, tailored shorts; predominantly white short socks, etc. Golf shoes with either soft metal spikes are acceptable. Smart casual clothing should be worn in the clubhouse (coats/ties optional).
COURSE ETIQUETTE

Carry a sand bucket and use it to repair your tee-to-green divots. Repair your pitch marks on the greens and rake your footprints in the bunkers.

Mobile phones are not permitted in the clubhouse and are discouraged on the course.
AFTER GOLF

There will be time for a shower and some 19th hole refreshments before the evening’s activities commence.
HIRE A ROWING CADDIE
Guaranteed you won’t want to carry your own clubs around St Michael’s, so why not hire a rowing caddie? Current rowers will be available for hire at a more than reasonable price of $30.00 per round, but there are no guarantees that they can improve your game!
HIRING OF GOLF CARTS

Although 18 holes of golf at St Michael’s present a great opportunity for some healthy aerobic exercise, many of you will have to cover considerable extra distances in getting to your shotgun-starting tee and in returning to the clubhouse from your final hole. It could well be a day for the hiring of at least one golf cart per four.

Golf carts are in limited supply, so please act quickly to book your four’s golf cart(s) by phoning St Michaels.

HOLE SPONSORS

Irrespective of whether you are entering a team in the inaugural SUBC Golf Day, you can sponsor one or more of the 18 holes that day for the small outlay of only $200 per hole.

Hole sponsors will have their logo/advertising message predominantly displayed on the tee of the hole(s) that they are sponsoring.

Hole sponsors are also permitted to display their own banners and signs on the course. All such advertising material must be delivered to the St Michael’s Golf Club at least two days prior to the event, so that the course staff can erect it.
RAFFLE/AUCTION ITEMS

Please let us know if you or your company can provide us with any items that can be raffled or auctioned during our post-play activities. As possible thought-starters, items such as the following are always popular:

· The use of private holiday cottages
· A mixed dozen bottles of wine
· A day/evening on Sydney Harbour aboard a privately owned craft
· The use of a corporate box at a major sporting event
· Dinner and wine for (say) eight persons at the purchaser’s home
· Items of sporting memorabilia
· Products/services provided by the companies of players in the field
